Plugged In: "Breakaway" was written in 2004 by Avril Lavigne, Bridget Benenate and Matthew Gerrard. Interesting enough, Avril Lavigne gave the song to Kelly Clarkson, who then decided to record it for the soundtrack of the 2004 film The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews.
"Breakaway" was released as a single the month before The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement was released.
"Breakaway" was exposed to and climbed the Billboard Hot 100 beginning in August 2004 and then peaked at number six on the Hot 100 in November.
The song spent 20 consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart which was a record for any song. It also shares the place with Celine Dion's "A New Day Has Come" for the longest time at number one for a female artist, 21 weeks.
